Latifa Elmrini Gonzalez is a Spanish/Moroccan/Australian visual artist and writer currently based in Melbourne. Active in the spoken word scene since 2012, she has performed across a variety of venues across Melbourne. Latifa is currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sculpture and Spatial Practice) at the Victorian College of the Arts at The University of Melbourne. She is currently expanding a writing blog that includes a portfolio of poetry, short story, fiction/non-fiction, reviews and essays. She self-published a poetry zine Wax & Wane in 2017 and is currently working on a short story anthology due to be released in 2019.
She explores cultural heritage as her most important asset and often draws on the experience of cross-cultural and cross-linguistic diaspora migrant experiences. Of interest to her is the historic misrepresentation of the ‘Muslim/Arabic body, language, experience’ as well as the systematic and pervasive misrepresentation of the female body in mainstream media and popular culture. She is particularly interested in counteracting negative cultural stereotyping, reproduction and re-imagining through the ownership and re-appropriation of image and language within minority communities. She is interested in the role that storytelling plays in the reversal of the Orientalized, colonial and imperialistic gaze by the reclaiming of ownership of cultural production by groups that have historically been cast out as the ‘other’.
